St. George Commemorative 3” Fly Reel

$1200.00

Only 30 Available in Canada

Hardy is producing an engraved, commemorative gold edition of the St. George reel in a limited run of 100 reels to celebrate the wedding of Prince William of Wales to Miss Catherine Middleton on April 29, 2011.

Hardy has had connections to the British Royal Family since 1898 when The Duke of York granted his Patronage to the company. This was followed in 1901 by the Prince of Wales, who went further by granting a Royal Warrant, an authorization to a tradesman to supply goods to a royal household. Further patronages or Royal Warrants were granted by The Princess Royal (1906), King George V (1911), Queen Mary (1911), Princess Mary (1923), and The Prince of Wales (1931). Since 1980, Hardy has held a Royal Warrant as manufacturers of fishing tackle for the current Prince of Wales, Prince Charles.

Named after St. George, Patron Saint of England, the first model in this long running series was a 3 3/4″ trout reel, weighing only six ounces. It was not just an incredibly lightweight reel for its day – it was also fitted as standard with such innovative features as a circular agate line guard and a compensating check. The original St. George reels were produced in Alnwick from 1911 until 1983.

For the Hardy collector, the original St. George is considered something to behold and highly sought after.

The Commemorative 3-inch St. George reel will be available in right or left hand retrieve on April 15, 2011 for an MSRP of $1200.

St. George Trout Reels

$750.00 – $795.00

A Hardy classic reel, improved with the addition of modern manufacturing and finishing techniques to produce a stunning modern classic. Perfect for use on smaller lighter rods, especially from our classic and heritage ranges the St George trout offers both Classic Form and up to date functionality in both black and spitfire options.

The Hardy St. George is simply steeped in history. Named for the Patron Saint of England, Hardy St. George reels were first introduced in 1911 to extend the Hardy range of fly reels and as a complement to their'Perfect reel series. The first reels were offered in mid to large sizes, but in 1920 the popular 3" was introduced, followed by the 2 9/16" St. George Junior in 1928.

The series was in production, with some variations in design and finish, until 1982. The St. George reels were built in smaller numbers than the Perfects were, especially in the smaller Trout sizes. This may have been due to the fact that the St. George series was more expensive then the corresponding Perfects.

Today, a 3" or Junior in good condition is a treasure, prized by anglers and collectors alike. The St. George reels combine all the desirable features that have distinguished Hardy Fly Reels for well over a century: Rugged construction, flawless performance, butter-smooth adjustable click-check (drag), classic good looks, and pride of ownership.

The new St. George reels are made in the Hardy factory in Alnwick, England. The only change from the early reels is the use of bar stock aluminum construction, rather than the older and less durable cast aluminum. Otherwise, all components are true to the originals; marine brass and nickel silver, traditional natural agate line guards, and 'Ivorine' handle. With the reintroduction of the St. George series, anglers who have dreamed of owning one of these beautiful reels can now have one to fish and enjoy for years to come, and then pass down to future generations. Available in a choice of two anodized finishes, black and spitfire-grey. Specify left or right-hand retrieve.

St. George Hotspur Salmon Reels

The St. George Salmon was first introduced in 1920, then, in 1921, the design was changed to incorporate the ‘silent wind in' action. The St. George Salmon remained in production for 5 years and now, 90 years later, Hardy will once again be manufacturing St. George Salmon reels, based on the original 1920 design, in it's Alnwick Factory.

Hardy Reel Designer, Charlie Norris said; "The St. George Salmon reels were incredibly advanced for their day. Using a mid arbour spool, these reels were also fitted as standard with such innovative features as a circular revolving line guard, twin handles and compensating check.”

"Today we have taken the same features and incorporated them into a fully bar stock version of the reel which is available with a mid arbour #9/10 spool and a standard arbour #11/12 spool." Specify right or left had retrieve.

Perfect Salmon Reels

$1100.00 – $1200.00

Since the first Hardy Perfect reel was designed by Foster Hardy in the Alnwick Factory, Anglers around the globe have agreed that the Hardy Perfect reel is indeed the ultimate in Salmon Fly Reels.

Many years have passed since Foster worked on his ‘apprentice' powered treadle lathe to produce the first ‘Perfect' reel, and countless reels of different designs have been sold by numerous fishing tackle companies, but none have stood the test of time like the Hardy Perfect.

Although Foster's original design has undergone several design updates in the last 121 years, the sound principal which Foster originally patented in December 1888 still remains in the Salmon Perfect we are manufacturing in our Alnwick Factory today.

The 2010 salmon Perfect takes the best features from the various designs over the years—check mechanism and dimensions from the 1921 Perfect, the 1972 reel back and a plate design which echoes that of 1912 Perfect. Combine these with Barstock Aluminium construction, 18 stainless steel ball bearing race, ivorine type handle and revolving line guard, and the fact that the Perfect reel design has been undergoing field testing since 1921 (dup. MkII version) and Charlie Norris, the Hardy Reel Designer, believes the Perfect we are launching for 2010 is possibly the best Hardy Perfect salmon reel hardy has ever made. Specify left or right hand retrieve.
