Fly fishing reels are an expensive and vital part of your equipment. To keep them like new, follow these steps below:
Spray the reel thoroughly, inside and out, with the garden hose for about five minutes. Remember to add a dab of grease to the inside when finished. |
Soak the reel in the kitchen sink with the spool separated from the cage. Remember to clean the sink when you are done or the trip to the river next weekend will be canceled by your wife. |
After the season is over, before putting the reel in its case for storage, clean it completely. For a complete cleaning, strip all the line and backing off the reel and give it a whirl in the dishwasher. Warning!!! Make sure that all the grease is removed or golf will have to be your escape route next year. |
A little dab will do you....only a small amount of reel lube is needed, too much will hinder the reel's performance. Like the brakes in your car, if you grease the disc portion of your reel you will never stop. The best product for the job is "Superlube", a Teflon based grease. |
